    The Social Inclusion Unit

    Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet

    The Social Inclusion Unit was established in December 2007 to perform a strategic policy advisory and coordination function across government. It currently performs this function across four work groups:

    • applied research, locational and data analysis support, including the development of indicators for social inclusion
    • policy, strategy and coordination activities across PM&C and other key agencies to advise on the Social Inclusion Agenda
    • Third Sector reform for strengthening local communities, including the National Compact, and
    • Secretariat for the Social Inclusion Board and the Community Response Task Force.

    Social Outcomes Policy Branch

    Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations

    The Social Outcomes Policy Branch provides support and advice to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Social Inclusion, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, and Senator the Hon Ursula Stephens Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, on social inclusion policy for disadvantaged groups. The support and advice is in terms of early childhood, education, skills development and training, employment and workplace relations.

    This division is responsible for policy, legislation, advice and programs related to human rights, legal assistance, Indigenous law and justice, and native title.
