National Compact with the Third Sector

On 17 March 2010 the Hon. Kevin Rudd, MP, Prime Minister of Australia launched the National Compact between the Australian Government and the Third Sector.

Leaders from around 80 Sector bodies, Members of Parliament, Senators and senior government representatives attended the launch in the Mural Hall at Parliament House.

The Reverend Tim Costello, Chief Executive, World Vision Australia also spoke, welcoming the Compact and the opportunities it offers for collaboration between the Government and the Sector.

    Why a National Compact?

The Government is committed to pursuing its Social Inclusion Agenda through, amongst other things, a strong relationship with the Third Sector (or non-profit sector), based on collaboration and respect.

The National Compact between the Australian Government and the Third Sector is one way to improve the way we work together now and in the future.

The Compact will provide a framework for building the capacity of non-profit and other non-government community organisations to improve community wellbeing.

The Compact’s development reflects extensive consultation over almost two years. For more information go to  the National Compact.

The Compact will be supported by an overarching Commonwealth action plan focused on the eight priority action areas identified during consultation and joint portfolio-sector action plans will be developed over the next twelve months.

The National Compact Sector Advisory Group was established on 17 February 2010 to advise the Australian Government on the implementation strategy for the National Compact; provide high-level leadership and advice; and champion the Compact more broadly across the Third Sector.

The Sector Advisory Group will also assist in the development of these action plans. More information about the Sector Advisory Group can be found on National Compact.
