A place-based approach
For a small number of Australians, social and economic disadvantage is apparent and enduring. A local, place-based approach to problems of social exclusion is one of the most effective strategic principles for dealing with social and economic disadvantage. This approach provides the opportunity to target pockets of the severely disadvantaged in a focused way, addressing the multitude of concerns locally and drawing in community groups and resources.
Addressing unemployment
- Keep Australia Working is a whole of government strategy to protect jobs and support business in the current economic environment. The final report on this strategy was delivered in October 2009.
- Local employment co-ordinators are in 20 identified priority areas across Australia.
- Jobs Fund is an initiative that supports and creates jobs and skills development through projects that build community and social infrastructure.
- The Innovation Fund is part of the government’s new employment services (Job Services Australia) commencing on 1 July 2009 and ending on 30 June 2012.The Innovation Fund is designed to address the needs of the most disadvantaged job seekers through funding projects that will foster innovative solutions to overcome barriers to employment which these job seekers face.
