What is the Government doing about:
Setting priorities?
The government has already begun developing fresh approaches for six social inclusion priorities.
Young people?
The government has set up a special communication channel for young people - the Australian Youth Forum - where they can contribute to debate about the important issues and problem resolution strategies that affect their lives.
Homelessness?
The government has set two major goals to guide its response to homelessness: to halve the number who are homeless and offer supported accommodation to all rough sleepers who need it by 2020. It has already set in place certain programs to help meet these goals.
Indigenous problems?
The government is determined to close the gap on Indigenous disadvantage, especially with respect to life expectancy, child mortality, access to early childhood education, educational achievement and employment outcomes. Programs are already being put in place to help.

Helping the unemployed?
A new and more effective employment service - Job Services Australia - commenced in July 2009 that is designed to provide better opportunities for helping people achieve sustainable employment. The government has also started developing a specific family-centred approach for jobless families with children.
Children at risk?
The Office of Early Childhood Education and Child Care runs a number of programs to support families and early childhood education. There is also a new Family Support Program run through the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and various specific programs to help protect children in need.
Disadvantaged neighbourhoods?
The government knows that there are certain areas in Australia where communities just don’t have enough resources and opportunities. They are starting up a number of programs specifically in these areas.
People living with a disability or mental illness?
The government offers specific employment assistance for people living with a disability or mental illness. A new national Mental Health and Disability Employment Strategy has been developed and other programs are available.
